Every day the average Canadian interacts with three to five franchised small businesses, whether it’s picking up their morning coffee, dropping a pet off at the groomers, grabbing lunch, or shopping for a gift

Franchising for small business: Five facts

Franchisees who run these businesses are local small business owners who operate establishments that Canadians rely on every day. Franchisees drive economic growth, create opportunities, and embody the spirit of entrepreneurship through their hard work, innovation, and community involvement.

With Small Business Month now in full swing the Canadian Franchise Association is sharing facts about franchising and highlighting that franchisees are small business owners who live, work, and contribute to their local communities.

Here are five fascinating facts about franchising that you may not know!

Franchisees are independent small business owners

Fact: Franchising is about being in business for yourself, but not by yourself. Franchisees are business owners who buy a location of a franchise brand; they have the freedom and autonomy of running their own small business while benefiting from the support, guidance, and resources provided by a franchisor.

Franchisees operate their own business, hire their own staff, and even market their location on a local level; but are able to leverage the support of a proven system for training, vendor relationships, national advertising, and more.

Any kind of business can be a franchise

Fact: The CFA represents franchising opportunities in over 60 industries, including food service, fitness, education, retail, senior care services, home and lawn maintenance, and professional services, allowing franchisees to choose a business that aligns with their background or passion.

Franchisees are connected to their local communities

Fact: Every franchisee is a small business owner who lives, works, and contributes to the community in which they live. Franchisees often innovate at the local level, tailoring products and services to meet community needs.

Most franchisees also give back to their communities through charitable initiatives and local partnerships.

Franchising is a great first step into business ownership

Fact: Many franchisees come from diverse backgrounds with no prior business ownership experience. Franchisors provide comprehensive training and support, making franchising accessible to a wide range of aspiring entrepreneurs.

Franchising fosters entrepreneurial growth

Fact: Franchising often leads to entrepreneurial growth, with many franchisees expanding to multiple locations. Franchisees are empowered to grow their businesses, become multi-unit operators, and contribute to local economies and job creation.

There are franchise opportunities available at any investment level

Fact: While some franchise opportunities require significant investment, many franchises have lower start-up costs, making business ownership more attainable.

There are franchise opportunities available for any level of investment and size, from home-based owner/operator business models to fully staffed brick-and-mortar locations. The CFA’s online directory tool, LookforaFranchise.ca offers the ability to search by industry type and investment level.
