Franchising: Balancing your needs and wants

Choosing the right franchise is all about striking a balance between your needs (the essentials) and your wants (the extras that make you excited). Ellie Reynolds, Master Franchisee for Drama Kids in Canada, explains more

Balancing your needs and wants

Determining at the outset the right Franchise to choose may be stating the obvious. However, you’ll still need to devise a roadmap that can help you navigate towards your decision. In short, that means being able to strike a balance between your needs and your wants.

In the case of needs, this can broadly be broken down into four categories – the first and most obvious one being financial investment. What are the initial costs? Can you afford the Franchise fee and start-up costs?

Costs notwithstanding, another key issue is that of market demand. Do your research and gauge if there’s enough demand in your area and whether such demand is likely to continue in the long run.

Similarly, support and training is important. For example, does the franchisor offer extensive training and ongoing support? Will you get help with site selection, marketing, and other essential aspects?

Finally, what are the Franchise terms?  Are you comfortable with the length and terms of the franchise agreement? What options do you have if you decide to exit the franchise?

Having discussed ‘needs’ it then comes down to what your ‘wants’ are. At its most basic are you passionate enough about the franchise industry in general (or a product in particular)? Does it align with your interests and hobbies? Is the brand well-known and trusted by customers? Will you feel proud representing this brand?

Similarly, does the franchise offer opportunities for growth and expansion? Is the franchisor innovative and forward-thinking?

Last but not least; does the franchise culture align with your values and work ethic? Will you enjoy being part of the franchise community?

Having determined what your needs and wants are – in terms of decision-making – the following steps will offer an additional guide.

  • Evaluate Your Goals: Define what success looks like for you personally and professionally
  • List Your Priorities: Rank your needs and wants to understand what’s non-negotiable and what’s flexible
  • Research: Dive deep into different franchises, read reviews, and talk to existing franchisees
  • Financial Analysis: Create a detailed financial plan to understand the total investment and potential returns
  • Consult Experts: Seek advice from franchise consultants, legal advisors, and financial planners
  • Visit Franchises: Visit existing franchise locations to get a feel for the business operations

By carefully considering your needs and wants, and taking the time to do thorough research and self-reflection, you’ll be well on your way to finding the right franchise that aligns with your aspirations and lifestyle.

In the meantime, Drama Kids is focused on expansion across Canada, ensuring that children have access to high-quality drama education that helps them develop essential life skills.
