The power of “One”

If there’s one thing we’ve learned in the past few years, it’s that connection matters

the power of one

In franchising, it’s easy to focus on operational success, KPIs and scaling strategies – and while those are all crucial – we must never overlook the power of people coming together with a shared purpose. That’s what makes franchising so unique, and that’s exactly what Stagecoach Performing Arts celebrated at this year’s Global Conference.

Held at the De Vere Wokefield Estate in Reading, England, the two-day event brought together franchisees, head office teams and industry experts from across Canada and the rest of the globe. Under the theme of “One”, the conference was more than just an annual get-together. It was a reminder that the strength of any franchise network lies not only in its brand or systems, but in the people behind it – the ones who show up, collaborate and push each other forward.

Here, CEO Andy Knights discusses why unity is a franchise network’s greatest strength, how shared experiences fuel long-term success and why creating space for collaboration is essential to driving a purpose-led brand forward.

Franchisees are entrepreneurs, but they’re not operating in isolation. That’s the beauty of the model – you’re in business for yourself, not by yourself. Our goal with this year’s conference was to create an environment where our network could truly feel that: not just through keynote speeches or business updates, but through practical, empowering experiences they could take back to their classrooms, teams and communities.

One of the standout moments of the weekend was our keynote from Kriss Akabusi MBE – Olympian, broadcaster and all-around force of nature. Kriss’s message hit home with so many of us: he spoke about teamwork, trust and recognising the unique value each person brings to the group. As a former member of the British 4x400m relay team, he understands that success isn’t just about individual performance – it’s about how well you pass the baton. That lesson is just as relevant in franchising as it is in sport.

At Stagecoach, our franchisees come from diverse backgrounds – performing arts, education, business – but they all have one thing in common: a drive to make a difference through creative education. That sense of purpose is what keeps our network cohesive, even as it grows internationally. And events like this remind us just how powerful that cohesion can be.

Beyond the inspiration, our conference was filled with practical sessions tailored to every stage of the franchise journey. From workshops on content planning and time management to financial wellbeing and business development, we focused on giving franchisees tools they can use right away. We also introduced more informal networking opportunities, allowing our franchisees to connect, share and learn from one another – something that’s often the most valuable part of any event.

And yes, there was plenty of laughter, applause and celebration too – because recognising achievement is just as important as setting new goals. Our network thrives because it’s fuelled by passionate people who believe in what they do. Celebrating that passion is what keeps the fire burning.

For me, the theme of “One” was more than just a conference tagline. It’s a philosophy we live by. In franchising, unity doesn’t mean uniformity – it means alignment. It means being clear on values, supporting each other through challenges and celebrating success together.

As leaders in the franchise industry, we need to keep championing the idea that culture and connection are just as critical as commercial performance. When franchisees feel part of something bigger – something purposeful – their businesses thrive. And so does the brand.
