Sara Lisk, a COBS Bread franchisee based in London, Ontario – and recent CFA Franchisee of the Year winner (Gold, Traditional Category) – opened her first bakery in 2019 and her second in 2024. With three more bakeries set to open this fall, in the Stratford and London areas, she is on track to become the first franchisee in Canada to operate five COBS Bread locations. However, her story goes beyond business growth, it’s also about building a business that truly serves the community.
Since day one, Sara has prioritized supporting local causes ranging from homelessness and addiction to animal welfare and various health initiatives. Whether donating buns for charity BBQs, offering popular silent auction prizes like “Bread for a Year,” or providing free breakfasts for participants at fundraising walks and events, Sara and her team are always looking for meaningful ways to give back.
One of the standout initiatives Sara supports is Doughnation Day, COBS Bread’s annual nationwide fundraising campaign. Sara’s London Northwest location is consistently among the top donors in Ontario. Every year, Doughnation Day brings staff and customers together to support local charities. Sara’s bakeries go above and beyond to turn the event into a true community celebration from decorating the stores, offering gourmet samples, to running raffles, and holding fun competitions between staff to see who can “raise the most dough.”
Over the years, Sara has partnered with organizations, including ANOVA, Children’s Health Network, Canadian Mental Health Association, Alzheimer’s Society Southwest Partners (ALZSWP), and Shine. To date, her bakeries have raised over $45,000 for local charities.
Sara also has a personal connection to her ongoing partnership with the Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners. Her grandfather was diagnosed with dementia several years ago, and through this experience, her family has received invaluable support from the organization.
Sara has contributed over $25,000 to date and recently made a multi-year pledge for ongoing financial support of ALZSWP.
In short, Sara’s story is a powerful example of how franchise owners can drive economic success while making a meaningful difference in their communities.
