How franchising impacts the lives of everyday Canadians

The Canadian Franchise Association is shining a light on local franchise owners through its “Join the FAM” (Franchisee Appreciation Month) campaign

How franchising impacts the lives of everyday Canadians

Every day the average Canadian interacts with three to five franchise locations. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee, picking up groceries, or heading to the gym, franchise businesses are an integral part of daily life for Canadians

With September being Franchisee Appreciation Month, the Canadian Franchise Association is spotlighting the crucial role franchisees play in supporting Canadian communities – not just as business owners, but as job creators, economic contributors, and active community members. Here’s an overview of their growing impact:

Canada-wide impact

Franchising is Canada’s 12th largest industry, projected to contribute $133.3 billion to GDP by 2026.

Meanwhile, 68,000 franchise locations are expected to operate nationwide by the end of 2025 while provincial and federal tax revenues are expected to increase to more than $33 billion.

Provincial impact

Ontario is expected to add nearly 32,800 locations, accounting for 42% of national growth, with strong growth also expected in Alberta, British Columbia, Newfoundland & PEI.

Employment impact

At present 1 in 10 Canadians are employed in a franchise system while franchise-related jobs are projected to reach 1.75 million by 2026 and total wages expected to reach $70 billion.

According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses (CFIB),nearly all small retailers (97%) report contributing to their communities or provinces in some way, with 74% donating to local charities and causes, 56% sponsoring local events and teams, and 55% providing job opportunities for youth.

Franchisee Appreciation Month is a chance to recognize and support these local champions who not only contribute to the economy but also make a real difference in the everyday lives of those in their communities.

Franchising is about being in business for yourself, but not by yourself—that support from a proven brand is why joining a franchise system can feel like finding a family. This year, the CFA is launching its “Join the FAM” campaign to highlight the franchise industry’s strong sense of community and honour franchisees of member brands through feature stories and videos available here.
