How a showcase in Toronto proved why the arts – and franchising – matter

There are few things more uplifting than watching a young performer step confidently into the spotlight. It is a moment that encapsulates hard work, belief and, often, a little bit of courage

How a showcase in Toronto proved why the arts – and franchising – matter

Last month, Global Director of Events and Partnerships at Stagecoach Performing Arts, Matt Clark, had the privilege of witnessing hundreds of those moments unfold on the stage of the Lyric Theatre at the Meridian Arts Centre in North York, Toronto, as the brand hosted one of its most ambitious student showcases to date.

Here, Matt discusses how moments like these showcase the transformative power of the performing arts and highlight the unique impact a purpose-driven franchise model can have on young people, communities and the entrepreneurs at the heart of it all.

Students from Stagecoach schools across Canada – from Halifax to Calgary, Montreal to Oakville – came together to put on a dazzling two-day performance. Their repertoire included musical theatre classics like Legally Blonde, Beauty and the Beast and Mulan. But what shone through even more brightly than the costumes and choreography was the passion, commitment and joy of every young performer on that stage.

Events like this are more than just entertaining spectacles. They embody the mission of Stagecoach: to help children and young people grow in confidence, creativity and self-esteem through the performing arts. And for our Canadian schools, this showcase was a defining moment – not only for the students but for the teams of franchisees and teachers who made it happen.

Under the leadership of Kristi Wenaus, our brilliant Master Franchisee for Canada, the event was meticulously planned and lovingly delivered. Kristi’s dedication to nurturing excellence in her network was evident in every detail. She said it best when she reflected on the showcase: “The students have worked tirelessly to bring these performances to life, and I couldn’t be prouder. They’re a credit to the schools they represented.” I wholeheartedly agree.

At Stagecoach, we talk a lot about the power of the arts – how they inspire, challenge and unite people. But what is equally powerful is the model behind our success. Franchising gives local entrepreneurs the opportunity to deliver something truly transformative in their communities. This event was a living example of that potential in action.

Our franchisees are the heartbeat of Stagecoach. They bring our ethos to life and build thriving, sustainable businesses with the support of a global brand behind them. The showcase in Toronto did not just highlight student talent – it was a celebration of our franchise network and its extraordinary impact. The performances were a product of creative collaboration, but also of entrepreneurial dedication.

What struck me most over the course of the weekend was not only the standard of performance – though it was certainly impressive! – but the sense of community. Parents, siblings, teachers and franchisees came together to cheer on these young stars. There was laughter, there were tears and there was a shared sense that something special had happened.

That is the magic of franchising done right. When you build a network rooted in purpose, supported by structure and powered by passionate people, it creates far more than just a business. It creates belonging.

We often say that Stagecoach helps children find their voice. But it also helps our franchisees find theirs – giving them the chance to grow professionally, lead with confidence and make a meaningful difference. In Canada, that difference was brought to life under the spotlight – but the real success lies in the ripple effect: in the confidence gained, the friendships formed and the dreams sparked along the way.

To everyone who helped make the Toronto showcase a reality – thank you. You reminded us why we do what we do. And to anyone considering a franchise opportunity that offers both commercial rewards and the chance to inspire – Stagecoach might just be the right fit for you.
